INFOVIS Redesign Field Guide

The complete tutorial is presented in the App, organized in three stages: Build, Critique, and Redesign. It includes a traceable Kunshan–Venice GeoNames case demo, prompt builders, the course’s textbook cheat sheets, a complete visual-idiom decision gallery, and a searchable Python/R visualization-tool atlas.

The worked case uses nine exact rows from do-me/Geonames, selected by stable GeoNames ID from a pinned Hugging Face Parquet revision. The subset includes Kunshan, Zhouzhuang, Suzhou, nearby lakes, Venice, named canals, and the Venetian Lagoon. Leaflet places them on two OpenStreetMap panels; graduated circles provide a population cue, and a labeled log-scale chart makes the four nonzero settlement populations directly comparable. Population dates and definitions are not harmonized. The data support a geographic starting point—not cultural equivalence, ecological change, community needs, or a historical route. Students must replace the example domain, community, dataset, tasks, evidence, idioms, algorithms, and additional sources with choices appropriate to their own projects.

The critique follows Munzner’s data and task abstractions and the course’s three-root idiom guide: Compare / Understand Variation / Reveal Structure. The embedded Figure 2.1 and Figure 3.1 cheat sheets are credited to Tamara Munzner and Eamonn Maguire and reused under CC BY 4.0 from the official book figure collection. Open-science and governance examples explicitly apply Lan and Liu (2024), Ziman et al. (2026), Wilkinson et al. (2016), Carroll et al. (2021), and Akhtar et al. (2024).

This is a zero-build Static Space. The root contains index.html, styles.css, app.js, README.md, and assets/; the complete case artifact, local verified subset, and reproducible extraction script are under instructor-demo/. The former Instructor case / My project mode switch has been replaced by visible Tutorial / Case demo navigation: the worked example and student workspace are never hidden. Three large completion buttons update a labeled three-stage progress display. Student entries remain only in the current browser through localStorage; assessed reasoning must be incorporated visibly into each student’s own Space.
