Free D&D Backstory Generator

This Space is a free DnD backstory generator for Dungeons & Dragons 5e and the 2024 (5.5e) rules — an AI D&D character generator for the story side of your sheet. Give it as much or as little as you want — a class and a tone, or a full slate of details — and it writes a playable character backstory built for the table, not just for reading.

What it creates

Every generation returns a structured, editable result:

• —A titled backstory of two to four paragraphs with named people and places
• —Personality traits, an ideal, a bond, and a flaw in character-sheet format
• —An important, still-living NPC from the character's past
• —An unresolved secret the DM can use later
• —A reason the character joins (and stays with) an adventuring party
• —Exactly three actionable DM hooks — each names a person, place, or object a DM can build a scene around
• —A short character-sheet summary for the back of your sheet

Output is rendered as Markdown with one-click copy and a .md download, so it drops straight into Obsidian, Notion, D&D Beyond notes, or a printed sheet.

Inputs

Character name, race/species, class, background, alignment, campaign setting, tone, backstory length, a defining past event, an important relationship, a secret, and free-form notes. Every field is optional — blanks become creative freedom, and the Surprise Me button rolls a playable combination for you.

5e and 5.5e compatibility

Backstories are deliberately system-light: traits, ideals, bonds, and flaws match the character-sheet format shared by D&D 5e (2014) and the 2024 revision, and the background list covers both. Nothing in the output locks you to an edition, and it adapts cleanly to most d20 fantasy tables.

Example

The Debt of Iron Hollow — a half-orc fighter who broke his mercenary contract to pull eleven miners out of a deliberate flood, carries the brass ledger-key that proves the crime, and sends coin home to a mother who believes he is dead. Hooks include the counting-house vault the key opens and the clerk who recognizes him in a market crowd.

Using it for session zero and your campaign

Bring the character-sheet summary to session zero instead of the full text, trade one bond detail with another player so the party pre-exists scene one, and give your DM the secret and the three hooks privately.
